Annotation:

At the moment of our birth, we are dragged through four hundred million years of evolutionary time. We change from aquatic creatures to air and earth dwellers, and then we gasp for breath all our lives.

To dive is to experience what it was like —
before we were born.

No wonder –
that we feel so much for the whales
that are stranded in the shallows.

We are alone in the shallows at our birth.
