In September 2024, after the hard work of a diverse international group of researchers and practitioners, an expert study called Marine Identity Conceptualization was produced under the expert patronage of Marine Social Scientist Dr. Pamela Buchan Ph.D. from the University in Exeter, England. The text was published in the British Ecological Society open access journal People & Nature. This working group agreed that: “An identity rooted in how the ocean as a place supports the sense of self.” This is the first time that an international, cross-cultural definition of marine identity has been agreed upon.

The findings are now published here: A transdisciplinary co-conceptualisation of marine identity
