Creatures, alive Earth, and something deep in us as well, watching us closely.
If life evolved from our current, plastic-debris-filled oceans, what would emerge? What if new creatures emerged that could live off of plastics?
Because plastics donβt just disappear. We should learn to live with them in an empathetic and collaborative way. We often forget the fact that it is these objects that will outlive us all (us parents and probably also our children).

It is very tempting to form kinship relationships with various substances and bacteria with pieces of floating plastic. Thinking about these relationships could help us to imagine how to create, consume and live in the context of planetary health. Although we may find this idea in any way distasteful, we find this way of thinking quite inescapable. We should accept the intruder into our skin and guts.
